they could reverse the course easily and the share price could have doubled. it is a very short sighted move.

I have some bad news for you. Mr. DIY is owned by the Bee Family & Tan's. They are Singaporeans. All those companies in Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, Poland, Netherlands are NOT under Mr. DIY Group Berhad. Its very likely Bee Family & Tan's own them. And all income goes to them NOT to Mr. DIY Group Berhad. Mr. DIY Group Berhad is more onto limiting their business in Malaysian shores.
This is depressing.

How the accounting system works then if they still fully owned a public listed company ...

If all those oversea operations belong to MrDIY Group Berhad, its income, assets & liabilities belongs to this stock. Eventhough, if they are all partially own by MrDIY Group Berhad, the stock is entitled to their income, assets & liabilities.
At the moment, if anything happens to MrDIY outlets in overseas e.g. riots, coup de tat and etc, this has no effect on MrDIY Group Berhad.
Market put money on MRDIY because we hope MrDIY grows, expand and become ASEAN powerhouse. Its safe to say, someone extinguished that hope with cold water. MrDIY is now just like KK, 99Speedmart, Econsave.
